A Lifetime of Innovation
Inventing has always been in my blood. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by how things work—and more importantly, how they could work better. At just twelve years old, I built my first functioning toy car with an independent suspension using nothing but a Tinker Toy set and rubber bands. That moment sparked a lifelong passion for solving problems in creative, intuitive ways.
The Spark Behind Waste-Eze®
For 29 years, I worked as a corrections officer. It was during a quiet early morning shift that the idea for Waste-Eze® was born. I watched an inmate struggle to tie a trash bag onto a receptacle—fussing with knots, stretching the bag, trying to get it to stay put. In that mundane moment, a thought struck me: Maybe the problem isn’t the bag—it’s the can.
Simple and Beautiful Solution
At first, I considered basic fixes—clips, hooks, elastic straps—but they all felt clunky and overcomplicated. I wanted something better. Something elegant. I recalled Einstein’s notion that the best solutions are “simple and beautiful.” Then it hit me: a flexible “V”-shaped rim that would adapt to the bag size, hold it securely, and allow for easy airflow during insertion and removal.
A New Beginning
In 2007, I filed my first patent for the concept. Unfortunately, due to health issues, the original attorney mishandled the application, and it was deemed abandoned. But fate had more in store. By chance, I met Edward Welch, a brilliant patent attorney, who saw the value in my idea and successfully revived the application. In 2011, US Patent 7,909,200 was granted. A second patent, US Patent 9,033,177, followed in 2015. Impressed by Ed’s expertise and dedication, I invited him to become my business partner. Together, we formed Waste-Eze, LLC, to bring this game-changing product to the world.
